On Second Thoughts

A moment between decision. Liminal. In both directions lie the weight of gain and loss - ahead the allure of growth. Behind the lure of comfort.

40x40cm

Oil on canvas

The subject is caught in a moment of pause, a possible indecision or inflection point that has them brought to a brief stillness before deciding to move forward, or to possibly turn back to an opportunity left unaddressed. The work is painted in oils on canvas using a variety of palette knives in expressive impasto mark-making. The abstracted marks and lost edges speak to uncertainty we face when poised in a liminal space of a life-altering decision. The vibrant palette suggests that in between these seminal, disruptive moments, life can still be colourful, bold and comforting and soft. I am a compulsive "comparer" of my life to others' lives - those who are both more and less fortunate than I am. In many ways, my work is an exploration, of spending a short time in the subject's shoes, to briefly feel the ebbs and flows they might feel, the joys and injustices, confidence (or lack thereof) to live a life I might never experience.
